French House
This home stands where it was built. William Loyd French built the house from 1948-1949 with the help of his friend Clyde Wilson. It is known locally as the “half-house” because only half the house was ever built due to a lack of funds. The staircase is particularly narrow and all the rooms except the kitchen lack open space. The interior is also very green. The house had no running water or electricity, but it did boast an indoor toilet of sorts in the corner of the kitchen, the toilet seats has a bucket below. Mr. French ran the Land Titles Office which you can find upstairs.
Also upstairs we have recreated a District Nurse's examination room, as it might have been in the Nurses Cottage where they lived on rotation to a community. Nurses rode out on horseback to area farms and at least one nurse arrived to take up her post by dog sled. These nurses were very important to the health of the communities they served, they prescribed medicine, treated minor injuries, determined when a doctor's attention was required and provided health education.
